The focus of the afternoon curriculum is Animated Literacy. This curriculum is also used by the USD 108 Kindergarten teachers, which helps the students make a smooth transition into Kindergarten as the characters, signs and sounds are familiar to them. The Animated Literacy incorporates music and movement, drawing, writing and the use of children's literature. Math, science, and social studies are also integrated into the classroom through a variety of activities. Both classes were introduced to a new curriculum this year for Language Time, in addition to the literature based curriculums already in place. This program is designed to help students initiate communication, develop literacy skills and improve receptive and expressive language. Familiar characters, Matt and Molly, and predictable routines make learning easier for young children. Matt and Molly are stick figures, Molly in a red dress and Matt in blue pants, that soon becomes best friends with the students. These two great kids assist in targeting receptive and expressive language goals through funny stories and hands-on-activities. The role-playing in the Matt and Molly stories help target other goals areas such as: identifying new vocabulary, using new vocabulary, processing verbal information through matching sentences and pictures, answering yes/no, "wh", and how questions, taking turns role-playing the actions in the stories, and recalling and retelling the stories. I have also incorporated sign language for the key nouns, action words and describing words to go along with each story. We use props for the actors such as dresses, shoes, glasses, etc. The beginning of each language session starts with a Matt and Molly song and ends with a good-bye song. Each lesson includes a variety of learning methods and outcomes such as: describing, sequencing, predicting, anticipating, following a story line, text match, role playing, group/choral responding. As this program develops language, literacy and story comprehension skills, it taps into all different learning styles. Visual learners have the pictures, text, sign language, and the ability to watch their peers act out the story. Kinesthetic learners have the opportunity to act out the story with real props and interact with pictures of the story along with the sentence strips. Sign language also engages this learning type. Auditory learners have the opportunity to hear the story multiple times, listen to discussion of the story through the "wh", how and yes/no questions.
