My name is Tandy Rundus, and I became Director of School Nutrition for USD 333 in August 2010.  I am a registered and licensed dietitian.  My background includes work in adult and public nutrition education as a County Extension Agent for 12 years in Republic County – Belleville, Kansas and as a consultant dietitian for rural nursing homes and hospitals with C.L. Gerwick and Associates based in Overland Park, Kansas. 

I am a native of Republic County and my husband and I (my husband Gene is an English Instructor at CHS) are graduates of Belleville High School.  We have two children in the USD333 school system, Paul and Terin.   I welcome any comments, suggestions and ideas that you have.  You can contact me during the day from 7:00am-3:00pm at my office in our main kitchen at Concordia Junior Senior High School, or leave a voicemail after hours.  The phone number is 785-243-8807. We have 18 very dedicated staff that make and serve breakfast and lunch daily  for over 1,000 students and staff.  It is a big job, but these ladies and guys love what they do and work hard to make healthy and nutritious meals your children will enjoy.

*Where can I get an application for free and/or reduced lunches?

                *Click Here

*If our  financial situation has changed – can I reapply for free/reduced lunches?

                *Yes, any time your financial situation may have changed due to loss of income or increase in family size, consider reapplying.  The only way to find out if you qualify is to fill out the application above and submit it to School Nutrition at 436 West 10th.

*How can I know what my meal account balance is?

                *You can always call during office hours and check it.  I will look it up as soon as I can and get back with you. 

                *We just implemented an on-line option with EZSchoolPay as of January 1, 2011 – so if you would like to set up the option to view your account on-line, click HERE for a step-by-step guide.  You will only use pages 2-13 and pages 23-24 of the set-up guide.  You will also need to contact me by phone or email to obtain your student(s) meal ID information.

                *The EZSchoolPay option only allows you to check your account balance; it does not allow you to pay on-line at this time – sorry!

                *Also with EZSchoolPay, note that it will list all your family members with for example a $10 balance, if you have 3 family members at $10, that does not mean you have a $30 balance- instead your entire family only has a $10 balance.  Email me if you have questions.

 

*What is the cost of school meals?

                *At Concordia Elementary School (CES) Breakfast is $1.45/Lunch $2.30

                *At Concordia Middle School (CMS) Breakfast is $1.50/Lunch $2.60

                *At Concordia Junior-Senior High School (CJSHS) Breakfast is $1.50/Lunch $2.60

                *Adult meals in all buildings are $2.00 Breakfast/$3.50 Lunch

                *Extra milk in all buildings is 35 cents

                *The Federal Government sets the price of reduced meals at Breakfast 30 cents/Lunch 40 cents

 

*Are School Meals Healthy?

                *I would hope so…it seems to be a fine line between meeting the federal guidelines and making food kids from K-12th grade like to eat!  There are a wide variety of likes and dislikes in your own family – multiply that by the fact that we serve 1,200 lunches daily and 440 breakfasts on average!

                *To meet USDA nutrition requirements for LUNCH, meals must provide one-third (1/3) of the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and calories. Regulations also require schools to meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that no more than 30 percent of an individual's calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.

                *Regulations require that all school BREAKFASTS meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In addition, breakfasts must provide one-fourth (1/4) of the daily recommended levels for protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C and calories

 

*My child has a food allergy, what can the school do the help?

                *In an OFFER based program (your child chooses the food items for his/her tray) instead of a SERVE based program (all items are place on the tray for the child) – USD333 is an OFFER program, no substitutions are required to be made unless the child has a disability.  However, it has been USD333 standard in the past to do whatever we can to HELP your family with food allergies and intolerances. 

                *The standard we are trying to follow under my guidance is that if your child’s allergy affects the main entrée item, we will provide a substitute item as best we can.  If the allergy is to an item that is an extra part of the meal (i.e. cheese) we will simply leave it off.   If the allergy is to a side component that the child can choose not to eat anyway, no substitute will be provided.

                *Milk is a choice item – so if your child has an allergy to fluid cow’s milk, we do have cups available for water at every meal time.  If you want to offer an alternative yourself, please contact me and we can work out storage for your drink item.

                *FINALLY NO ALLERGIES/INTOLERANCES will be accommodated without a doctor’s notification, click Here for the appropriate forms to be filled out; your doctor determines if the allergy is a disability or not

 

*SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Each year, the United States Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like

USD 333 to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. Any child

under age 18 may come and eat. For more information about the Summer Food Service

*BREAKFAST is Important!

Children who eat a nutritious breakfast tend to perform better in school, have a better attendance record, and exhibit fewer behavior problems. USD 333 School Nutrition wants to encourage all our students to come eat breakfast with us!

Breakfast menus are posted on the district web site monthly – so check out what we are having and getup early to eat with us!

CES breakfast serving times are 7:30-8:00am – a breakfast-on-the-go grab bag is available after 8:00am, just check with a staff member or teacher.

CMS and CJSHS breakfast is served 7:25-8:00am. A regular sit-down breakfast is available daily and a Grab-and-Go option is also available daily for students. A second chance breakfast option is available for Jr/Sr high students Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.

*DID YOU KNOW…..?

  • Kansas Schools do NOT serve “commodity” foods.  Kansas is the only state in the nation that received an option called “cash for commodities” – this program allows Kansas schools to receive cash instead of commodity foods.  The cash is then used to purchase food items from approved suppliers.
  • Kansas School Lunch programs are required to BUY AMERICAN whenever possible to promote foods and support producers here in the United States.
  • USD 333 has a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant through the Kansas Department of Education which provides all youth at Concordia Elementary School with a fresh fruit or vegetable snack daily while school is in session.  It is a GREAT way to introduce your children to new fruits and vegetables and encourage them to TRY something new!
