3rd Graders Bake Bread

Third graders at CES baked bread this week with River Valley Extension agent Pat Gerhardt. Third grade students particpate in the program called "Bread In A Bag" every year. Pat teaches the kids about wheat ..from being planted to harvest. She then takes them through the milling of wheat into flour and eventually into a loaf of bread. While she is at the school she incorporates this into a lesson on nutrition and shares with them about the grain group of the food pyramid. Ms. Gerhardt also works with the students on measurement and works with them to make homemade granola. At the end of the afternoon every student has a warm, yummy loaf of whole wheat bread to take home with them. One afternoon also involves parent volunteers. Five parents that volunteered and worked with helping the students make their bread.
