CHS Science Club Going to Battle

Forty-six CHS Science Club members and their sponsor, Mrs. Gram, are engaged in preparing for their third Science Olympiad Competition and their first Kansas BEST Robotics Competition – a competition in many respects similar to junk yard wars slated for October 20, 2007. BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization providing an extracurricular academic experience engaging students in effective teaming, self-directed learning, problem solving and apprenticeship aligned with national science standards. BEST provides the initial training then sends teams home with identical kits containing the brain, CAD design and Easy-C device software, controller, and electronic components along with an array junk from which teams construct their robots.

Modeling research and design strategies of engineers and other technical professionals, the goals are broad. The ultimate goal is to design and deploy a robot capable of competing in the 2021: A Robot Odyssey game 6-weeks from the date of receiving their kits. In addition to evaluation of their spirit and sportsmanship, teams must prepare a comprehensive compilation of their design-development processes, knowledge and skills by way of a professional quality team notebook, oral presentation and table display. The robot will be evaluated and project notebook submitted for scoring October 13, Mall Day, at Towne East Mall, one week prior to game day.
