What to Do When the Progress Report Doesn’t Look Good

As progress reports come out, many parents may feel helpless about what to do if their child’s grades aren’t so good. At CJHS/ CHS, we have high expectations for our students and there are times when adolescents don’t live up to those expectations, due to many factors. We offer several options for our students who are struggling academically:

1. Parents, please call the guidance office. Mr. Ken Meyer is head of our Student Intervention Teams, and is one of our guidance counselors. He will arrange a SIT meeting, at which interventions and strategies for individual students will be devised. The parents are invited to attend, but if they can’t, they will be kept informed of the implementation of strategies and level of success.

2. At the junior high level, please call Mr. Kevin Steinert, our counselor at that level, and he will have the junior high SIT meet in the same manner.

3. For our Spanish speaking students, we have Mrs. Linda Reyes in the media center after school, for homework help.

4. Our teachers are here before school and after school to assist students; please email them, or call our office to set up an appointment. Have your child meet with the teacher also to get specific instructions on how to improve their grade.

Stay in contact with the teacher via email or phone; they will be in contact with you! We need to work together to make school successful for some of our kids!

I hope to have several other options in place soon for our struggling students. Things can look bleak at times, and parents can feel helpless, but if you stay in contact with the school and don’t give up, together we can make great things happen!
