K-6 Site Council Notes - April 11, 2007

April 11, 2007

SITE COUNCIL MINUTES
APRIL 11, 2007

The April Site Council meeting was held at the CES Library on Wednesday, April 11 at 11:30 A.M.  Those in attendance were:  Chris Fall, Theresa Bonebrake, Sara Hutchinson, Brandt Hutchinson, Holly Brown, Kathleen Miller, Randall Whitney,  Ronda Gumm, Lisa Knapp, Jolene Kindel, and Susan Ball.

Chris Fall and Theresa Bonebrake gave an update on the 3rd and 4th grade playground plans.  They showed pictures of the equipment the Playground Committee is looking at and explained there were two different slides we could go with.  We do have enough money for the equipment and one of the slides now.    The other slide is more expensive, but is very appealing. We have two fundraisers left this year, the Carnival and the sale of bricks, which could help to cover the cost of that slide.   Our discount prices are good through June, but  Karl and Chris would like to be able to place an order in May.

Several members reported on what they learned concerning the pros and cons of having a CARES professional therapy dog.  There were far more positives than negatives from the schools they contacted.  The most important thing is that this is a big commitment, and the handler should be the owner. The owner is in charge of the care, grooming, and health of the dog, and liability insurance is another area of consideration.  We are looking to have a dog at the elementary school to begin with, and also one at the middle school.  The board is open to this and encourages us to do more research into the project.  Training is done in June and August, but right now there is a waiting list of 6-12 months.  The key is to find someone who would be the owner/handler of the dog.  Chris will discuss this with the staff.

A discussion was held about the Middle School playground, and it was noted that it is not good.  Several ideas were discussed, and Lisa asked that members continue to think  about ideas for the playground, and this project can carry  on into  next year.

Kathy Miller will give the Site Council report at the May Board meeting.

The next Site Council meeting will be on Wednesday, May 16, at the CMS library at 11:30.  If members have a Site Council notebook, please bring it to turn in at this meeting.   We will also be electing officers for next year.
