K-6 Site Council Notes - March 2006
March 15, 2006
The Site Council met in the CES Library at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2006. Those in attendance were Becky Jones, Tammy Zimmerman, Cindy Kocher, Chris Fall, Heather Isbell, Lisa Knapp, Susan Ball, Gwen Hake, Lisa Canfield, Jolene Kindel, Karl Stricker, and Sara Hutchinson.
The minutes of the February meeting were read and approved.
Nancy Bolz, State Director on NCA visited CES and CMS on Feb. 27, 2006. She visited with Karl Stricker and Chris Fall to go over the application process. Ms. Bolz recommended the possibility of applying for K-12 District Accreditation instead of continuing to be accredited K-6, and 7-12. Nine teachers will be attending the NCA Convention in Chicago at the beginning of April. Lisa Moore, Sonia Erkenbrack, Sara Hutchinson, and Laura Barta will attend this Convention.
State Assessment Update: The 3rd and 4th grades will finish Reading Assessments the week of 3-13-06. They will complete the Math Assessments during the first and second weeks of April. The kids seem to be mindful of the implications of these tests and are taking the tests seriously.
Mr. Stricker reported on the emergency drill that was held at CHS. There have been positive comments made regarding this drill and much is being learned from it. There has been a debriefing session in which the drill was evaluated. The next steps in continuing to update the Crisis Plan are to review and finalize the plan. After finalization, an in-service will be held for all staff to learn the plan. Another safety issue that was mentioned is the lack of lighting in front of CES and near where teachers park at CMS. More discussion was held relating to safety in the pick-up area at CES after school, when it was suggested that some type of posts be anchored to the slab to prevent cars from possibly coming up onto the holding area.
Lisa Knapp gave a Wellness Committee update. She reported on the proposal that was presented to the BOE Monday night. She said that the proposal presented actions to improve wellness in our District. These are some of the proposed changes: more selection of fresh fruit with meals, more whole grains served, less excess for class parties, vending machines on for teachers with purchases to be consumed in the teachers' lounge, diminishing of candy incentives in classrooms, and a full twenty minute lunch period for students. Mrs. Fall reported that she is working on a schedule to include 50 more minutes of P.E. per month and holding recesses before lunch instead of after lunch. Sara Hutchinson reported that Krista Russell has a pilot class that has been doing calisthenics. Mrs. Russell and the classroom teacher feel this has had a positive effect on the class. Some CMS staff is participating in their own version of "The Biggest Loser." Each member of the two teams is required to get 90 minutes of exercise per week. In a two-week period, 75 pounds were lost between the 20 participants. Students are noticing the change in their adult role models.
There was a good turn-out for the CES Carnival that was held in February. $1,400 was raised by this P.I.E. sponsored event. P.I.E. is a very supportive organization that really helps our students and their teachers. All of the parent volunteers are appreciated.
Preschool Screenings will be held March 16. Kindergarten Roundup and Screenings will be held Friday, April 7, 2006 at CES. Roundup will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Parents meet in the library while future kindergarteners visit a kindergarten classroom. Screenings will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Heather Isbell reported on the CAP schedule. When students arrive, they have a snack and a recess break. Beginning at about 4:00, students begin their homework and read for 20 minutes. When reading and homework are finished, students may play games or participate in an art activity on some days.
Tammy Zimmerman will attend the April 10, 2006 BOE meeting.
The next Site Council meeting will be April 12, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. at CMS in the library.
